Information about Zakopane

Zakopane is a small town near the southern Slovakian border of Poland, just at the foot of the Tatra Mountains. It’s only about two and a half hours by bus or train from Krakow. The town was founded in the 1600s and developed as a health spa and resort community.

Known as the “Winter Capital” of Poland, Zakopane is a popular destination for downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding and mountain climbing. Thousands of skiiers head to Kasprowry Wierch, Nosal, and Gubalowka Hill. Several international ski competitions are hosted in Zakopane, although the town continues to be unsuccessful in bids to host the Winter Olympics.

During the mild summer tourists come for hiking, mountain climbing and spelunking (cave exploration). Visitors enjoy strolling past the stores and restaurants along Krupowki Road, seeing the street performers and taking in carnival rides. Winter holidays are very popular in Zakopane with unique music and food of the goral culture.
