The start of your Petra tour begins at the modern entrance to this ancient city. On horseback or by foot you will travel to the traditional entry to Petra through a mile-long winding chasm called the Siq. A half hour walk through the soaring canyon walls reveals many remains of Nabatean shrines carved into the walls, water channels, and some of the original paving stones. The extravagant colors of the sandstone walls with their whorls and bands of colors are a visual treat. As you emerge from the Siq that breathtaking moment of actually facing the towering Treasury, which is the iconic image many folks have of Petra, may make you gasp. It is monumental, several stories high, and quite spectacular in the morning sunlight.
