The start of your Petra tour begins at the modern entrance to this ancient city. On horseback or by foot you will travel to the traditional entry to Petra through a mile-long winding chasm called the Siq. A half hour walk through the soaring canyon walls reveals many remains of Nabatean shrines carved into the walls, water channels, and some of the original paving stones. The extravagant colors of the sandstone walls with their whorls and bands of colors are a visual treat. As you emerge from the Siq that breathtaking moment of actually facing the towering Treasury, which is the iconic image many folks have of Petra, may make you gasp. It is monumental, several stories high, and quite spectacular in the morning sunlight. Your Petra tour will only reinforce the statement that Petra is an archeological, geological, as well as an anthropological phenomenon. Around the corner from the Treasury, are many carvings along the Street of Facades, which is lined with tall, impressive tombs with large façades for the wealthy. Some of the canyon walls are lined with dozens of smaller more humble tombs. Continuing on your Petra tour, once you have reached the ancient city center you will be able to explore the Theater which was cut out of solid rock and the Royal Tombs, which are made up of several distinctive tombs: the Urn Tomb, small yet colorful Silk Tomb, the Corinthian Tomb and the Palace Tomb. The flash flood damaged Colonnaded Street, runs through the center of Petra with numerous unexcavated sites on either side. The Christian era at Petra came during the 3rd and 4th centuries and consequently boasts a number of churches. As you will discover on our Petra tour, there is a great number of fascinating excavations to see. One puzzling piece of architecture is the Great Temple. Archeologists are still debating if this were a true temple or perhaps the senate hall for the Nabataean government. A public pool and gardens have recently been discovered nearby. Another informative stop on our Petra tour is the Petra Museum, with its collection of very fine Nabatean pottery, coins, ancient statuary, water pipes, and other artifacts. There are over 800 fascinating monuments with more being discovered as continuing excavations by various organizations take place. During this Petra tour , stones and nature will share the legends, myths and truths of this astonishing city as we move from one spectacular discovery to another. Lunch to be arranged. At the end, you return back with memories of a magnificent city carved from the extraordinary beauty of the sandstone-mountains that surround this area and impressed with the engineering and artistic feats of the Nabatean people.
