Information about Jaipur
The largest city in Rajasthan, Jaipur, was built in the 18th century as India’s first planned city. Often referred to as ‘The Pink City’ Jaipur is known for its distinctly colored buildings. In 1876 many of the buildings were painted a red color to welcome the Prince of Wales for a visit. Over time the red has faded to different shades of pink. This vibrant city is home to palaces, forts, temples, monuments and gardens.
Shopping the bazaars gives travelers the opportunity to get an inside view of life in Jaipur. Expect to see flowers, elephants, food and fare. Be prepared to tip snake-charmers and beggars if you take photographs. And be aware of scammers, there are plenty of people in Jaipur who will try to swindle your money. The area is famous for its ‘Rajais’ colorful quilts stuffed with cotton. Many tourists buy these well-made items. Jewel merchants are also plentiful here.
Things to do in Jaipur include cooking workshops where you can learn how to cook Indian food. Take a bicycle tour around the town or attend a gem workshop where you can create your own unique stones. Visit the Jantar Mantar, it’s an observatory that is a UNESCO world heritage site.
