Information about Bridgetown

The capital, commercial center and largest city in the nation of Barbados is Bridgetown. Locals refer to the area as “town” but in 1626 the town was called “Indian Bridge” because there was a small bridge over a river inlet known as the Careenage. The bridge was believed to have been built by Indians. Bridgetown is located at the southwest corner of the island, within the parish of St. Michael, along Carlisle Bay. Another bridge in the city was opened in 1872 and was called The Chamberlain Bridge. This historic city is a UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) World Heritage Site.

Tourist attractions are plentiful in Bridgetown. Places to visit include: National Heroes Square, The War Memorial, Fountain Gardens, The Barbados Parliament Building, Barbados Museum and the oldest Jewish synagogue in the western hemisphere. Visit the house that George Washington stayed in and see the church he attended. A trip to the boardwalk at the river inlet will lead to Carlisle Wharf and Barbados Heliport where you can take a helicopter tour of the city. Or check out the yachts and catamarans at the boardwalk and take a tour to see sea turtles.
