Information about Ypres
Ypres is a medieval Belgian town just a few kilometers from the French border and the North Sea. Its mild climate and its important role in WWI make it a popular destination for European tourists.
Ypres (also Leper- Dutch) was the scene of intense battles during WWI, and its famous Clothmakers’ Hall houses the Flanders Field Museum commemorating the war. The Cloth Hall with its 49-bell carillon is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ypres now hosts an international campaign of “Mayors for Peace,” gaining this small city the moniker- “City of Peace.”
Important landmarks in Ypres include the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing, Saint George’s Memorial Church, the beautiful fountain and medieval architecture of the Grote Markt, and the gothic- style St. Martin’s Cathedral. Every three years the Kattenstoet (Cat’s Parade) takes place in the streets, and each year there is an auto rally and a canoe polo tournament.
