Information about La Paz

Bolivia’s third most-populous city and the government center is La Paz. Located on the west side of Bolivia at nearly twelve-thousand feet above sea level it sits in a bowl shaped area, surrounded by the Altiplano Mountains. High above the city is snow-covered Illimani, a towering triple-peaked mountain.

There are many museums in La Paz including the Museo Costumbrista, where you can see displays of ceramic dolls dressed in traditional customs from the 19th century. The Museo del Oro (Gold Museum) has pre-conquest items made of gold, silver and copper. At the Museum of the Litoral Coastal Region, you can see objects from the 1979 war where Chile won the war with Bolivia. The ‘Burned Palace’ can be toured. It was set on fire in 1875 during an uprising with rebels who opposed President Tomas Frias Ametller. It has been rebuilt and renovated.

If you like seafood then La Paz is the place for you. Breaded clams, fish and many lobster presentations can be ordered here. Deserts consist of dates, papaya in syrup and dehydrated fruits like white fig and mango. Date liqueur or grape wine is recommended.
