Exploring traditional Shanghai architecture.

Yu Yang Li – Formerly known as Ming De Li, this place used to have 33 classic Shikumen houses in the first part of the XXth century. This site is perfect for learning how Shanghai used to look decades ago before becoming one of the largest trading hubs in the world. 

Shang Xian Fang – Being a fine example of the well-known Shanghai Shikumen Longtang style, this structure was erected in 1921, with its two-storey houses highlighting prominent Spanish influences within the classic baroque style. 

Xintiandi – This area is a relatively new attraction in Shanghai despite looking like old Shikumen buildings. While having all the features of the classic buildings, the interior of these constructions features modern design and technology. Thus, this place is another symbol of intertwined traditions and innovations, featuring a laid-back atmosphere. 

Tianzifang – This place was primarily known for its numerous factories during the 1930's. However, today this zone is a thriving with art, as numerous artists have set up their studios and workshops in this lane and surrounding streets. So it’s a good place to enjoy peculiar architecture and modern art at the same time. 

Note:

Shikumen translates as "stone gate" and represents a distinct style in Shanghai architecture, characterized by a blend of traditional Chinese townhouse design and Western decoration, which was brought in the late XIXth century.
