Kutna Hora was founded in XIII century.

The mines were given a one-third of European silver extraction.The first miners' settlement called Cuthna Antique, it means old monk's robe. According to the legend, monk fell asleep on the hill and in a dream he saw a silver twigs.

Waking up, he actually found them and covered it with his robe. Kutna Hora became the site of Europe's first "silver fever". St. Barbara's Church was made of sandstone. St. Barbara opened rocks in front of miners, lit the darkness of the mine and showed the right path during landslip. To have a temple in her honour means to have her support and protection. Ossuary is connected with the history about the abbot who went in XIII century to Jerusalem and brought a little bit of the Holy earth. During the ceremonies the abbot threw this earth on the local cemetery. Pilgrims heard about Sedlec as well as many Christians from Poland, Bavaria and Belgium. They wanted to be buried here.

From XVI century bones were excavated by priest and later were used for decoration of the chapel`s seller. The Italian court was just a fortress to protect the merchant route. King Wenceslas II gathered here all the Bohemian mints. There were two reasons why he did it. First of all in Kutna Hora there was silver for minting coins and secondly the king began the monetary reform. His aim was to create a new high-quality coins and monetary unification in the kingdom.
