Wonchi Crater Lake Adventure
Located 155 kilometers west of Addis Ababa, between the towns of Ambo and Welliso, Wonchi Crater Lake was formed by a volcanic eruption during the Tertiary period of the Cenozoic era.

This breathtaking destination sits at an altitude of 2800 meters above sea level and offers a stunning mix of natural wonders: a large crater lake, hot mineral springs, cascading waterfalls, fertile farmland, and a historic monastery with a medieval church.

Often referred to as a trekker's paradise, Wonchi offers a rewarding experience for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. You'll enjoy hiking through lush forest trails and serene valleys, and even have a chance to relax at the naturally heated springs.

After about an hour of downhill trekking, the trail opens up to a tranquil lakeshore and a small wooden dock. Here, you can enjoy the peaceful view, hike or ride a mule along the shoreline, or take a boat ride to explore the lake’s small islands. One of these islands is home to the Kirkos Monastery, dedicated to Saint Cyricus, which dates back to the medieval period.

Itinerary

You’ll begin your adventure early in the morning, departing from Addis Ababa at 7:00 AM for a scenic 158 km drive southwest to Wonchi Crater Lake.

After approximately 3 hours, you'll arrive at Kala (3,300 meters above sea level), located at the rim of the crater. From this vantage point, you’ll enjoy stunning panoramic views of the lake and surrounding highlands.

The hike begins here and covers roughly 14 kilometers, taking about 6 hours round-trip. Along the way, you'll pass through indigenous forests, alpine vegetation, mineral springs, and a beautiful waterfall.

The route also includes charming local villages, where you can learn about traditional life and observe old watermills still in use.

Midway through the hike, you'll stop for a lunch break in the peaceful Tilika Valley, followed by time to relax by the lakeshore.

Next, you’ll enjoy a serene canoe ride across the clear crater lake waters, exploring its islands. After the boat ride, you’ll hike back to Kala where the car awaits.

Around 3:00 PM, we’ll conclude our trip and begin the return drive to Addis Ababa, leaving only footprints and taking unforgettable memories with us.
