Escape to Sai Kung
Adventure tour in Hong Kong
Tour Price : USD 495 Duration : 8 hours Languages: English, Dutch, German
Sai Kung, a former fishing village, is now a commuter town and popular destination for local tourists, looking for a day away from the city. Set in a green environment along the sea shore it is a geat starting point for hikes or water based activities. The area around Sai Kung is also home to the volcanic rock region of the Hong Kong National Geopark of China, particularly well known for the hexagonal rock columns and coastal features such as sea arches and sea caves. The many islands near the shore make for very tranquil waters, and unparalleled natural beauty. This tour will introduce you to the marvels of the geopark, as well as an impression of traditional village life in the area.
First we visit the Lions Nature Education Centre which has an excellent exhibition showcasing the main features of the geopark, giving you an idea of what we're going to see in the field later in the day. From there, we walk along the old village of Tiu Min Hoi, and see the old fishing boats floating in the water. After finding our way through the maze of Sai Kung Old Town we visit the beautiful Tin Hau and Pak Tai temples. The morning ends with a visit to the seafood market at Sai Kung public pier, where the catch of the day is sold by fishermen directly from their boats. After lunch we head over to the pier to board a traditional wooden sampan, which will take us for a ride over the seas. First stop is Yim Tin Tsai, an island with a long history but no current permanent inhabitants. After taking a tour of this intersting island, we continue along the shores to the southern tip of Yin Island to see one of Hong Kong's best sea arches.
This arch is big enough for small boats and canoes to sail through. Next is Sharp Island, with the impressive Elephant Nose Rock with a number of sea caves, and here we go ashore again to explore the large variety of rocks, and to have a look at the tombolo connecting this island to the small Kiu Tau - but only if the tide is low enough. From Sharp Island it is a short ride back to Sai Kung port, from where we can take a taxi back to your hotel, arriving between 17:30 and 18:00.
