Information about Catania
Catania is the largest city in Sicily, founded in the 8th century BC on the Ionian Sea at the foot of Mount Etna, the tallest active volcano in Europe. Its proximity to the volcano has been historically both a detriment and a benefit to the city, with eruptions causing vast destruction but volcanic ashes producing extraordinarily fertile soil for grape vines.
Today Catania is known as the “European Silicon Valley” for its position as the main economic and industrial hub of the island. It is also a popular tourist destination, with many famous archaeological sites, palaces, cathedrals and museums attracting visitors, as well as the natural beauty of its beaches and warm waters.
The symbolic landmark of the city is u Liotru, a massive stone elephant topped by an Egyptian obelisk. Other notable landmarks include the Roman Theater, the Odeon, Forum, the Achillean Baths, and various Christian basilicas.
