Information about Lipari Island

In the Tyrrhenian Sea, off the northern coast of Sicily, is Lipari Island. Typically it’s a small town but during tourist season the population soars. Between the Vesuvius and Etna is a volcanic archipelago, the largest chain is in Lipari. Due to its volcanic origin, the island is covered with pumice and obsidian also called volcanic glass. Pumice mining is a large industry on Lipari Island and the pumice is shipped throughout the world.

Visit the Museo Archeologico Regionale Eoliano or the “old castle”. It’s a collection of artifacts that were recovered from archaeological sites throughout the Aeolian Islands. Some of the items are from ship wrecks. Most of the exhibits have captions written in English but photography is not permitted. For some fun in the sun visit The Coral Beach. With sun beds, deck chairs, umbrellas, canoes, a children’s play area, a free shuttle service, showers, beach volleyball, happy hours and music, what more could you ask for?! Don’t wear your bathing suit to town, if you do you’ll risk getting a $700 fine!

Keep in mind when booking a room for your trip that some of the houses in Lipari do not have heat or air conditioning. It gets cold in Lapari in the wintertime so pack warm clothes and consider a bed heater if your room isn’t set up for heating. There are luxury hotels available as well.
