Information about Jurmala
Jurmala is a beautiful seaside resort area in Latvia on the Baltic Sea approximately 25 kilometers from Riga. It is famous for its long stretch of white sand beaches and many Soviet- era concrete resort hotels and wooden beach houses.
Jurmala has historically been home to many sanatoriums, health spas and mud baths. Visitors also enjoy hiking the nearby woodlands and along the strand, as well as horseback riding and swimming. Watersports in Jurmala extend to kitesurfing and windsurfing, as well as rowing, sailing and waterskiing. During summer months Jurmala hosts several festivals including the Midsummer Festival in June that celebrates the longest day of the year.
Concerts and music festivals also attract many visitors to Jurmala, including the Jurmala International Piano Competition and most notably the New Wave festival, a competition for young pop singers which the Lonely Planets Guide calls one of the major highlights in Latvia.
