My City: Vilnius (Wilna) is the capital of Lithuania. It is situated in South-East Lithuania. The main tourist attraction is here the old town with its unchanged organic medieval street plan. The old town of Vilnius belongs to the UNESCO‘s World Heritage List. The city is often called city of hundred churches and visitors of Vilnius are amased by the quantity of chirches buit in different centuries and various styles. Catholic, ortodox, protestant, lutheran churches and Jewish synagogue share their neighbourhood showing that Vilnius was since many ages a tolerant and cosmopolitan city.
Among the most visited sites in Vilnius is the Cathedral Square, the old Gediminas castle built on the hill, Gotic St. Ana‘s and Bernardine‘s churches, the City Hall Square, the Pilies street with residential buildings of Gotic, Renaissance, Classicism styles, the complex of Vilnius university (one of the oldest in Europe) consisting of 13 buildings and 13 courtyards of different shapes featuring mainly Renaissance style, countless picturesque Baroque style churches, the former Jewish city blocks that were turned into the Jewish Ghetto during the second world war, the KGB museum and the marvelous medieval water castle in Trakai town which is near Vilnius and once was the capital of Lithuania.
