A trip to Madagascar isn’t complete without a visit to the bustling capital city of Antananarivo. All international flights land just outside the city so for many travelers it’s the first and last stop on their journey. Tana can be a bit overwhelming to the uninitiated with its chaotic traffic and pollution. However, once you have acclimatized you will discover a wonderful city with a wealth of history and culture, delightful shopping, and world-class cuisine; think fine French fare at island prices.

TOUR PROGRAM:

7:30 Am: Antananarivo Full day to do the city tour. Antananarivo, Tana, or the city of a thousand warriors is well known as "Analamanga" which means the blue forest where the "Merina" ethnic group is dominated. As Tana is the capital of Madagascar, you can find all the colors of the 3 million Malagasy population. Our visit usually involves the lower town, Ambohimanga or the blue hill; the craft market, and finally the upper city for a view of Tana's point.

13:30 Am: Ambohimanga Ambohimanga is a hill and traditional fortified royal settlement (rova) in Madagascar, located approximately 24 kilometers (15 mi) northeast of the capital city of Antananarivo. The hill and the rova that stands on top are considered the most significant symbol of the cultural identity of the Merina people and the most important and best-preserved monument of the precolonial Merina Kingdom. The walled historic village includes residences and burial sites of several key monarchs. The site, one of the twelve sacred hills of Imerina, is associated with strong feelings of national identity and has maintained its spiritual and sacred character both in ritual practice and the popular imagination for at least four hundred years. It remains a place of worship to which pilgrims come from Madagascar and elsewhere.
