Originally the fort was wooden and was considered to be a major link in the chains of other fortifications on the Dniester. During the rule of Petru Rares the Soroca fort was rebuilt in stone, and it still stands well-preserved. For many times the fortress was used in wars against the Ottomans. For example during the Great Turkish War it helped the Moldavians to defend the Ottomans. It is worth noting that the fortress was sacked by the Russians in the times of the Russo-Turkish war.
