Information about Mandalay

Located on the east bank of the Irrawaddy River is the second-largest city in Burma, Mandalay. Known as the center of Burmese culture, the city is the economic hub for commercial, education and health. Mandalay sits along the Sagaing Fault which is a tectonic plate boundary between plates in India and Sunda. In 1956 Mandalay experienced an earthquake with a magnitude of seven, it was the largest earthquake in its history.

Mandalay is filled with cultural and religious architecture, statues and artifacts. There are more than 700 pagodas and many monasteries. The world’s official Buddhist Bible which is also the largest book in the world, sits at the foot of Mandalay Hill. Located on the east side of the city is Waterfall Hill. This is a popular spot for rock climbing and exploring caves.

For some comedy see the Moustache Brothers. The comedy act features Burmese dancers and political jokes. The act is located at the home of the comedians as they served 12 years in prison for their political performances and are not allowed to do the show publically. At the Mandalay Marionettes Theatre you can watch a puppet show.
