The city of Rotterdam was settled in the 13th century next a dam on the Rotte River, and over the centuries has developed into an important international center of commerce mainly due to its strategic location. The city has been nicknamed the “Gateway to Europe” for its position as a thoroughfare from the North Sea into Europe by way of an interconnected system of waterways and for being at the heart of rail, air and road transport as well.

More than 1.7 million citizens live around the largest port in Europe enjoying the nearby beaches and the fantastic shopping in the area. Several famous festivals take place in Rotterdam, such as a 6-day track cycling race, Zesdaagse van Rotterdam, and the Rotterdam International Film Festival. The tallest building in the Netherlands is in Rotterdam, Maastoren, and the city is also famous for its Cube Houses (Kubuswoningen) built by architect Piet Blom in the 1980s.
