Information about Utrecht
The ancient city of Utrecht has evidence of human occupancy as early as the Stone Age, with the founding date of the city recorded around the building of a Romen castellulm fortification here around the year 50 on the banks of the river Rhine. Located in the central region of the Netherlands, Utrecht is an important transportation hub for the country and its fourth largest city.
Utrecht has historically been the center of Dutch religion for both the Catholic Church and Protestants. Some of the city’s oldest and most visited structures include the Cathedral of St. Martin and the Dom Tower from the 13th century, Jacobikerk, Buurkerk, Nicholaikerk and Geertekerk.
Visitors to Utrecht come to see the Old Canal, Oudegracht, De Inktpot, and Jaarbeurs, one of the biggest convention centers in the Netherlands. One of the largest used car markets in Europe is also located in Utrecht in the Voordorp district.
