The museum of sea history:
This museum resumes more than 3000 years of history. Local archaeologists have made a selection of objects to discover the story of boats in New Caledonia. Very nice collection of navigation instruments, miniature pirogues and the extraordinary collection of La Perouse. A part of the museum is dedicated to the Second World War and the American presence on the territory
The town museum:
You will approach New Caledonia with an ethnological point of view. Discover the story of the Kanak civilisation and all the aspects of their traditions.
The Bernheim library:
One of the nicest building of the colonial period in Nouméa. The construction of the roof was signed by Gustave Eiffel. It is the biggest library of New Caledonia, it's holds more than 70000 books and a complete collection of local news papers.
The Zoological and Botanical Park Michel Cabasson:
This park will give you the opportunity to see the emblematic fauna of New Caledonia: Cagous, Perruche d’Ouvea, and other wild birds and bats that are nearly extincted in the wild. Take a walk through the alleys of Araucarias and local palm trees. A patch of tropical dry forest, one of the most threatened ecosystems on earth, was protected there and plantation programs are taking place.
The town aquarium:
This site is one of the most visited in New Caledonia. The founders of this aquarium have reconstructed the natural coral ecosystems. The famous nautilus is presented there. You can visit a room where ultraviolet light is projected on coral which reveals their natural fluorescence. The aquarium has just been renewed and other pools have been added.
The Tjibaou cultural center:
This amazing structure, designed by Renzo Piano, opened in 1998. It is a cultural establishment presenting and developing kanak art and traditions. Many events and concerts are organised there. An ethno botanical garden presents the relation between plants and Kanak tradition.
Islands around Noumea:
“Ilot Canard”:
This natural reserve is the nearest of Nouméa. It as been arranged to welcome tourists for scuba diving. An underwater path of 400 meters will make discover the coral world.
“Ilot et phare Amédée”:
The lighthouse was constructed in Paris in 1862. It was sent to New Caledonia and put up in January 1865. This site was declared underwater fauna reserve. A diving centre will give you the possibility to swim with the turtles and maybe see the grey sharks and the Raies Manta.
“Ilot Maître”:
Island developed to receive scuba divers. There is a “Divescope” which allows you to see the underwater life without getting wet.
Anse Vata Bay:
Very nice beach where you will be able to try your abilities in kytesurf and windsurf.
Natural parks around Nouméa:
"Le Mont Koghis":
The nearest mountain of Nouméa. There is a very nice primary forest to visit and tree activities. You can get to the top in 1h30 and have a very nice view on Nouméa.
“Le Mont Mou”:
You will need to walk 3 hours to get to the top of this mountain. At the top, at 1220m you will go through a luxuriant moss forest. You will be able to see the American plane, Dauntless, which crashed 400 meters lower during the Second World War.
