12-Day Tour of Romania – Discover the Best of History, Culture, and Nature

This 12-day tour takes you through some of the most beautiful attractions in Romania. You will discover unspoiled countryside, authentic traditions, and breathtaking mountain landscapes. The itinerary includes four crossings of the Carpathian Mountains, covering approximately 2400 km in total (with daily drives between 60 and 320 km).

The journey starts in Bucharest and continues through Curtea de Arges. In summer, there are two possible routes: National Road 7 (open all year) along the Olt River Valley, or the spectacular Transfagarasan Road (open only from July to September). Along the way you will visit Poenari Castle – the real fortress of Vlad the Impaler – Vidraru Dam, Lake Vidraru, and Balea Lake. From there the route continues to Sibiu, Sibiel, Hunyad Castle (Corvin Castle), Alba Iulia with its impressive fortress, Turda Salt Mine, and Cluj-Napoca.

The tour then takes you to the Maramures region, famous for its wooden churches and living traditions. You will explore Vadu Izei, Barsana Monastery, Sapanta with its Merry Cemetery, and Sighetu Marmatiei. A highlight of this region is the steam train Mocanita, which runs along the scenic Vaser Valley.

Next, you will discover Bucovina and its UNESCO-listed Painted Monasteries, including Moldovita, Sucevita, Putna, Voronet, and Agapia. Other stops include Neamt Citadel, Bicaz Lake and Gorges, Red Lake, Sovata resort, Sighisoara medieval town, Biertan fortified church, Rasnov Citadel, Bran Castle, Poiana Brasov, Brasov, Sinaia resort, and the splendid Peles Castle. Finally, the tour ends back in Bucharest.

Day 4: Sibiu – Corvin Castle – Alba Iulia – Turda (310 km). Visit Alba Carolina Fortress and Corvin Castle. Dinner and overnight in Turda.

Day 5: Turda – Cluj-Napoca – Mara – Vadu Izei (260 km). Accommodation in a local family house. Traditional homemade dinner with wine and plum brandy. Overnight in Vadu Izei.

Day 6: Maramures tour: Vadu Izei – Barsana Monastery – Sighetu Marmatiei – Sapanta – Viseu de Sus (160 km). Dinner and overnight in Viseu de Sus.

Day 7: Steam train ride Mocanita in Vaser Valley (09:00–15:30). Continue to Campulung Moldovenesc – Sucevita (160 km). Dinner and overnight in Sucevita.

Day 8: Sucevita – Moldovita – Putna – Voronet – Agapia – Targu Neamt (240 km). Discover Bucovina’s Painted Monasteries (UNESCO). Dinner and overnight in Targu Neamt.

Day 9: Targu Neamt – Bicaz Lake – Bicaz Gorges – Red Lake – Sovata (210 km). Visit Neamt Fortress and cross the Carpathians again. Dinner and overnight in Sovata.

Day 10: Sovata – Bran – Rasnov – Poiana Brasov – Brasov (220 km). Visit Bran Castle, Rasnov Fortress, Poiana Brasov resort, and Brasov. Dinner and overnight in Brasov.

Day 11: Brasov – Predeal – Busteni – Sinaia (50 km). Visit Peles Castle and enjoy Sinaia resort. Dinner and overnight in Sinaia.

Day 12: Sinaia – Bucharest (140 km). Transfer to Bucharest airport or hotel. End of tour.
