Information about Edinburgh
Scotland’s capital city is situated along the coastline of the Firth of Forth on the North Sea and near the Pentland Hills, the Braid Hills and Blackford Hill. Edinburgh covers more land area than another Scottish city, but it is Scotland’s second largest city in population. The weather is generally mild here, both in summer and winter, except for the occasional European windstorm in the colder months.
Edinburgh has been given the nickname The Athens of the North for being a central historical force during the “Age of Enlightenment,” a time in the late 17th and early 18th centuries of intellectual and cultural movement and when some of the world’s most influential authors emerged. Edinburgh’s Old Town Center has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as has its planned New Town.
Notable landmarks include the University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace, the National Museum of Scotland and Edinburgh Playhouse.
