Culture and History tour in Ljubljana
Tour Price : On request Duration : 6-8 hours Languages: English
The tour starts with drive to the region of Štajerska which covers a large area in the north-east of Slovenia. It is renowned for its ancient and medieval towns, beautiful scenery with vineyard-cloaked hills, its ski resort in Pohorje, and for its beautiful and majestic castles and quaint churches. The largest town in Štajerska is Maribor, which is also the second largest town in Slovenia.. The city of Maribor lies at the foot of Pohorje - one of the best known ski resorts in Slovenia, hosting the Women’s World Cup competition (Golden Fox). Visit of Maribor starts in old city centre on the banks of the Drava river, known as Lent. We proceed to other interesting sites such as a four-centuries old Vine (Stara trta) still producing some 25 litres of wine every year. Other places of interest are its 16th century Town hall on the Main square (Glavni trg), its cathedral dedicated to St. John the Baptist originating back to the 13th century, the University Library, National theatre of Maribor, University, National Liberation Museum, Maribor’s castle, etc. The tour continues to one of oldest and most picturesque towns in Slovenia, rich in history and culture, is Ptuj. Ptuj has one of the best preserved medieval city centres and its own castle on a hill overlooking the town, with excellent views over the river Drava. The castle houses a museum rich in regional history, and the old town is where you’ll find several monasteries, churches, museums and a neogothic town hall dating back to the19th century. Party-time in Ptuj comes at the end of winter in the form of a grand carnival (Kurentovanje). The main protagonist is Kurent (ancient Slavic god of pleasure and hedonism). Men dress in sheepskins and wear heavy cowbells around their belts and colourful masks on their heads to scare the winter away as they walk around town. Around Ptuj itself are many places of interest, and just a few kilometres from Ptuj are some of the best known wine routes with vineyards that produce some of the best wines in Slovenia. These are to be found particularly around Ljutomer and Jeruzalem where you can taste one of the most excellent (white) wines Slovenia has to offer. After lunch (dinner) drive back to Ljubljana.
