Full-day tour Johannesburg - "Contrast-Tour"
For Thulisile Khumalo, your tour guide, it is really important that she shows you the real life of the South African locals. This is why you will also walk off the beaten track. You will learn a lot about the history of South Africa, but also about today's everyday life.
Being a lifelong resident, Thulisile can also share with you you a lot of tips and suggestions for further activities on your journey. You will visit Sandton and Alexandra, two townships which couldn't be any more different from each other - and therefore reflect the contrasts of South Africa perfectly. On the one hand, the wealthy and affluent Sandton, and on the other hand the poorest township of South Africa, "Alex," as the locals affectionately call their home.
You will meet and talk to the locals in both quarters and will hear stories "straight from the horse's mouth" as they say. You will also learn more about the history of the gold strike which led to the birth of a whole nation, the imperialism which threatened it and the discrimination which almost destroyed it. Moreover, you will hear about the fierce human spirit that saved and freed this nation.
City Tour of Soweto In the African suburb Soweto are living more than four million people. This tour will permit you to get an idea of the reality of this country. On the way through Soweto you will pass the Baragwanath hospital, the biggest hospital in Africa.
You will visit a kindergarten and the catholic church Regina Mundi which has been named a national monument due to its commitment against the Apartheid. Moreover, you will see the monument of Hector Pieterson, one of the first children to have been killed during the political distempers of 1976, as well as the Hector Pieterson museum.
The tour continues past the Mandela family house museum where Mandela lived with his family before he was arrested. There may be time to visit these fascinating museums or you may take advantage of them on another day.
The last stop in Soweto is at one of the many Shebeens, the former illegal bars or restaurants that developed during the Apartheid. Since the African people were not allowed to buy or sell aclohol, they did it in these so-called Shebeens. They were also a safe meeting point for political discussions.
Here you will have dinner after which the tour will end.
