Information about Kandy
The cultural capital of Sri Lanka is Kandy. The city is built in the hills and the name Kandy came from the colonial rulers in Sinhala whose word Kanda means ‘a hill’. The city is famous for the Kandy Perahara. A parade that is said to be the most colorful procession in the world. Drummers, dancers and ornamented elephants perform in the streets. This even takes place for seven nights in July or August.
One interesting place to visit is The Temple of Tooth. This is one of the most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the world. One of the Buddha’s teeth is kept inside. The amazing temple was built in the 17th century. Don’t forget your camera if you visit Lankatilaka Temple. It’s built on a rock called Panhalgala and from it you can see a fascinating panoramic view of the hills, fields and local vegetation. Knuckle Mountains contains 35 peaks more than 3000 feet high.
While you are enjoying your stay in Kandy don’t miss out on some mouthwatering food. There is a variety of cuisine available from seafood to Indian food and even western if you’re missing KFC or Pizza Hut. There isn’t much of a nightlife in Kandy so plan on stretching out your evening meal and getting a good night’s sleep.
