Basel big and small

Excursion in Basel

Tour Price : Euro 140.00 Duration : 3 hours Languages: English, German, French

Basel offers a wide range of attractions, from museums and churches to modern architecture and public art. A city tour allows visitors to explore some of Basel’s most well-known sights. Today, Basel combines international style with the charm and intimacy of a small town. Often called a “pocket-sized metropolis,” it is a dynamic center of business, arts, science, and culture. The city is home to people from around 150 nations. Known for its tolerance, Basel promotes peaceful co-existence and an active integration policy. Many major companies have their headquarters here, including the Bank for International Settlements (BIS).

A significant historic moment for Basel was the Great Council of Christendom, held from 1431 to 1448, which brought the city international attention. This led to the establishment of Basel University, officially opened in 1460, now the oldest university north of the Alps. Over the centuries, Basel continued to grow as a center for science and the economy. In 1501, the city joined the Swiss Confederation.

Elegantly positioned on a bend of the Rhine River, Basel offers visitors many beautiful sights and attractions. Whether you are interested in museums, modern architecture, historic churches, or simply enjoying the city’s restaurants and pubs, Basel has something for everyone. The Rhine River itself is a popular spot, where visitors can take scenic boat trips.

The Old Town of Basel is particularly interesting. Here you can visit the Old City Gates, such as the Spalentor, built at the end of the 14th century. A must-see is the Münster Cathedral, one of the city’s most prominent landmarks and the burial place of Erasmus. Other highlights include the red City Hall, constructed between 1507 and 1513 to commemorate Basel’s acceptance into the Swiss Confederation.

Basel is located in the Dreiländereck, the “three countries’ corner,” providing easy access to the Swiss Jura Mountains, Zurich, Lucerne, and nearby regions of France (Alsace) and Germany (Black Forest). With a few days, visitors can explore a wealth of sights and experiences. The city’s cosmopolitan character is enhanced by its university, industry, and proximity to international borders.

Basel is also home to more than two dozen museums, covering diverse topics from art and architecture to cartoons and dollhouses. Each year, the city hosts many international events, including Baselworld, the world’s largest watch and jewelry trade fair, held in late March and early April. During this event, the city’s population more than doubles, drawing visitors from all over the world.
