Adventure tour in Cappadocia
Tour Price : 350 euros Duration : 3 days Languages: English, French
1st day: North of Cappadocia
Depart from the hotel to Devrent Valley where the rock formations will play with your imagination. Then to Avanos the pottery centre of Cappadocia. The longest river in Anatolia, the Kizilirmak River (The red river) meanders through the village, and provides the terracotta and ceramic clay that signify the area. A demonstration of the masters at work makes you truly appreciate the craft of pottery making. Avanos village is quaint with many Greek style homes inabited by colourful villagers. The next stop is Pasabag (Monks Valley), unique to this area are the many stemmed fairy chimneys. Leaving Pasabag behind, we head to Cavusin village with houses cut into a steep rock face. We will visit the oldest church in the region believed to be from the 5th century. In Göreme we will visit the Open Air Museum, which is one of Turkey's World Heritage Sites. It is a cluster of rock-cut Byzantines churches, beautifully decorated with primitive 11th and 12th century frescoes, chapels and monasteries, a refectory, storeroom, and kitchens. Onward to Uchisar, we will climb its rock castle to have a wonderful panoramic view of the region. Return to Urgup.
2nd day: South of Cappadocia
We leave Urgup and head to the sleepy village of Mustafapasa (called Sinasos when it was an Ottoman Greek settlement). The village almost feels untouched by tourism as life continues the old way. Mustafapasa was inhabited by Greek orthodox until 1923. Both churches and caravanserai have well preserved stone work. Soganli valley is a beautiful and interesting place to explore. Its two valleys were largely monastic with ancient rock-cut churches, some of them covered by paintings showing Christ's life. Donkey trekking is available upon request. Keslik is a small village and its fairy chimneys resemble the shapes of animals. The village itself has been restored. The frescoes within the churches, monasteries and tombs are a good quality. Keslik is renowned for its very cold fresh spring water. Cemil's origins date from the former Greek habitation in this area. In the village centre and old mosque slowly decays into ruins. Pancarlik has its well preserved frescoes which show the biblical cycle. The churches have many frescoes and paintings. Return to Urgup.
3rd day: Ihlara Valley (walking)
Ninety kilometers from Urgup is the stupendous Ihlara Valley, a most beautiful and wild and naturally preserved valley. We will make an easy hike of four hours with visits of troglodyte churches, witches chimneys and thermal springs. Lunch by the Melendiz river. Exploring an underground city, discovery of commons rooms, dormitories and wine presses, return to Urgup over the Anatolian Plateau.
