Information about Ashgabat

The capital and largest city in Turkmenistan in Central Asia is Ashgabat. It is located between the Kara Kum desert and Kopet Dag mountain range. It is a major industrial city with factories manufacturing oil, glass, metal, silk, cotton textiles and carpet. Many mosques, markets and museums can be found in Ashgabat as can state institutions and the administrative bodies of Turkmenistan.  

The Neutrality Arch is the tallest structure in the capital. It was made for the former president to commemorate Turkmenistan’s official neutrality. At the very top of the monument is a statue that rotates 360 degrees each day so it‘s always facing the sun. Amazing views of Ashgabat can be seen from the top of the structure. Ashgabat’s carpet museum is an interesting place to visit and to learn about Turkmen culture. Another museum remembers an earthquake in 1948 and the burial of over 100,000 bodies. There are artifacts and pictures from before and after the event and documentation on how the town was rebuilt.
