The Alps can be enjoyed all year round
The Alps are traditionally regarded as a winter ski resort, and many people tend to believe that once the highest resorts like Val Thorens or Val d’Isere close down there’s simply nothing to do in the region until next winter. The reality is a bit different, as there are some Alpine ski resorts that employ the concept of all-year-round service, providing a great opportunity to enjoy the beauty of Alps during spring, summer or autumn as well. One of such resorts is Les Gets, located in about hour’s drive outside the airport of Geneva.
Les Gets enables the lift system starting from mid-July and turns it down in September, allowing mountain bikers and simple walkers to access the surrounding mountains and the mountain village as well. The lifts are modified to be able to carry a bike while most of the mountain paths, covered with snow during the winter, are conveniently marked for walking and mountain biking without getting lost. Needless to say, with the clean mountain air and the temperatures rising up to 25 C this is a very enjoyable experience.
However, biking and walking aren’t the only activities to enjoy in the area during summer, as there are numerous facilities offering golf, tennis, archery and even swimming. Or if you are looking for something with a bit of a thrill, you can try canoying or parapenting, which will certainly be unforgettable in a setting like this. There’s even a petting farm, where you can enjoy riding a horse or hiking with a donkey.
Accommodation won’t be a problem as well, since most of the chalets are usually vacant while often providing top-notch hotel service. There are even spa facilities, outdoor Jacuzzis and masseurs to pamper the most exquisite visitors.
You can also get the taste of the local flavor by visiting the market every Thursday to get your samples of homemade cheeses from all over the region. The local fruitiere also offer guided tours for those who would like to know how these cheeses are made. Yet, you can’t beat the attractiveness of a tour to the local chocolate factory, during which you are allowed to create your own recipe and take the result home.
As you see, the Alps can prove to be a great destination and a pleasant escape from the hectic atmosphere of the southern French coast during the summer.
