BATTLE OF THE BULGE (WWII) BASTOGNE (16 December 1944 – 25 January 1945)

Towards the end of World War II the Germans launched an offensive campaign trough the densely forested Ardennes region. 13 Divisions or about 200.000 men, more than 340 tanks and more than 280 Armoured fighting vehicles participated in this offensive.

By the 21st of December the Germans had surrounded Bastogne, an important crossroads. Although condition within the surrounded perimeter were tough, the 101 Airborne held out. On the 26th of December the counter attack began and the first relieve forces reached Bastogne. Running out of fuel and ammo, SS Panzer troops abandoned their vehicles and returned on foot to the German lines. On the 7th of January, Hitler started to withdraw all his forces, including his SS-Panzer divisions from the Ardennes. However, fighting would continue for another three weeks.

American casualties mounted to 108,347, including more than 19,000 killed,  some 47,500 wounded and some 26,000 missing or captured. German losses were estimated between 85.000 and 120.000.

- The Mardasson Memorial and  the Bastogne War Museum

- Short visit to the city of Bastogne and Patton Monument

- the Tiger II Tank at La Glaise  

- The memorial of the Malmedy massacre at Baugnez where 86 American POW’s where killed by SS-soldiers
