Information about Avignon
The ancient town of Avignon is one of the most well preserved medieval cities in France, with its Old Town listed as an important UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located on the banks of the Rhone River, it is the capital and largest city of the Departemente of Valcluse, with nearly 100,000 total inhabitants in the town center and surrounding city.
Avignon has often been called “The City of Popes”, its impressive Papal Palace having been the seat of seven different popes throughout history. Visitors enjoy strolling through the Old Town, viewing such sights as the Notre Dame des Doms Cathedral and many gothic architectural homes and civic buildings. The original walls and towers surrounding Avignon have been fully restored, including its picturesque bridges.
The Avignon Festival is a yearly international theater festival that draws about 100,000 each summer. Avignon also houses the International Congress Center and the Universite of Avignon and Vaucluse.
