Information about Pisa
The capital city of the province of Pisa in Tuscany is located at the mouth of the River Arno on the Tyrrhennian Sea. About 200,000 people live in the area, including the many university students who come for the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies and the University of Pisa.
The city is world renowned for its famous Leaning Tower, which is the bell tower at the Cathedral and Baptistry. There are other historic churches and sights in Pisa, including the entire Piazza del Dumo (also called the Square of Miracles) where the tower is located. Knights’ Square is an impressive structure, as is the church of Santo Stefano dei Cavaliere, where one can view a famous bust by Donatello and other artworks.
St. Francis’ Church, the Citadella, the Compostano Monumentale and the Medici Palace are also notable landmarks, and visitors enjoy Pisa’s botanical garden and its several noteworthy museums.
