Culture and History tour in Amsterdam

Although Vincent van Gogh was a VERY difficult person, he is now championed as a gifted painter and a gifted writer. If you study his works of art and his letters, you will meet one of the most complicated and fertile minds of the Nineteenth century. With his letters to his beloved brother Theo Van Gogh, as well as other family members and friends you can follow his life.  Van Gogh was well read in the modern literature of Holland, France and England. Visited all major museums out there. Thus he was very widely informed and visually very well educated.

Two extremely important Van Gogh collections now exist in Holland:

1) The family collection in the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam, opened up in the 1960's.

2) The private Kroller-Muller collection in Otterlo, amassed in the 1930s and opened up for the benefit of the public. Can be reached by car (closed mondays).

As an art historian, having written several books on Van Gough, I have a vast amount of knowledge to share. As your tour guide, I will help to sharpen your visual powers, step by step, and help you appreciate the inner qualities of his work. As you wander through the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam and at another day travel to Otterlo you can enjoy Vincent van Gogh’s impressive, adventurous, expressive, experimental works of art. 

The Amsterdam tour lasts approximately 1 1/2 hours.

A one way ride to Otterlo is just over one hour, then spending at least 2 hours in Otterlo to incude the fabulous open air sculpture park. I will take you there in my private car seating 3 or 4 persons, more in a rented car. Remember to book early by contacting me via email so that we may discuss tailored rates and times. 

Tour prices may vary according to number of hours, starting point and group size. Children are very welcome, by the way. I usually take groups with 2 to 4 persons. Extra cost: tram or bus tickets. Museum tickets.
