Chinatown can broadly be divided into four main districts - Kreta Ayer, Telok Ayer, Tanjong Pagar and Bukit Pasoh - each with its own distinctive flavour. The heart of activity is in the Trengganu / Smith Streets area. Discover the rich historical beginnings of Chinatown at the Chinatown Heritage Centre. The Centre takes you back to a different time in the history of the area and immerses you in the life of the early Chinese immigrants. While in Chinatown, look out for the Al Abrar Mosque along Telok Ayer Street, and the Jamae Mosque and Sri Mariamman Temple along South Bridge Road. They lay witness to the harmonious racial and religious atmosphere in Singapore. In the evening, Chinatown comes alive with the hustle and bustle of the Night Market. After dinner, wander along the narrow lanes and test your bargaining skills with the street vendors. Then, travel on a trishaw from Chinatown to Clarke Quay. Hop onto a bumboat for a cruise along the Singapore River before disembarking at the Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay. This architectural icon with its distinctive twin spiky shells has earned the centre the popular nickname of a beloved local fruit, the Durian.
