For the past five centuries, the Habsburg and then the Bourbon royal families have ruled Spain. Some visitors may find it useful to divide Madrid into Habsburg Madrid: Plaza Mayor, Plaza de la Villa, Calle Mayor, Buen Retiro Park, Palacio de Santa Cruz and Bourbon Madrid: Royal Palace, Almudena Cathedral, Puerta del Sol etc. In other words, the historic center is still known as Habsburg Madrid, while the area to the east is known as Bourbon Madrid.
