Information about Locarno

Located on the northern tip of Lake Maggiore in the Swiss Canton of Ticino, at the foot of the Alps is Locarno. The capital of the Locarno district, it is the third largest city in the Canton Ticino by population. The primary language spoken in Locarno is Italian. Palm and lemon trees flourish here where they receive 2,300 hours of sunshine per year. Locarno has the warmest climate in Switzerland. 

The pilgrimage church of Madonna del Sasso was established as a result of an appearance by the Virgin Mary. It’s the most notable sight in Locarno and thousands flock here each year to see it. The Castello Visconteo, is a medieval castle with an archaeological museum. Take a cable-car designed by famous architect Mario Botta, up Locarno’s nearest mountain and enjoy hiking, skiing and sledding. 

The Lido Locarno is said to be an oasis for leisure, sport and wellness. It has thermal baths, swimming pools, water slides and leisure pools. Its location is near Lake Maggiore, a beautiful beach surrounded by a stunning seascape with the Alps Mountains as a backdrop. Each year the International Film Festival is held in Locarno. For eleven days people enjoy films at the Piazza Grande. This event usually takes place in August.
