A municipality in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland is Mendrisio. The city is surrounded on three sides by; Italy, the Province of Como and the province of Varese. Mendrisio is home to several Swiss Heritage Sites of national significance including; the Church of S. Sisinio alla Torre, the Church of S. Martino and the complex of S. Giovanni.
In Italian the city name ‘Mendrisio’ means ‘the magnificent town’. It’s referred to this due to the many historical buildings and houses. The city is also known for its Good Friday procession where a recreation of Christ’s passion is acted out without blood or violence. Many hiking trails can be found though the vineyards. There’s a marble quarry and archaeological excavations of Tremona-Castello.
To see a panoramic vista, visit Monte Generoso. You can see the Alps and all the way up to the Apennine Monutains. At the Galleria Baumgartner you can view exhibits of model trains. Swimming, cultural events and nature trails are just a few of the activities in this magnificent city. Bicycling is popular here so renting a bike and touring the city is a good option too.
