Dear Rich, thank you very much for your request. As safety of tourists is the main point, I don't drive myself while running excursions. But both my services and a car (for two tourists) is approximately $30 per hour not counting entrance tickets. Would be glad to show you our beautiful city Saint- Petersburg and of cause we can discuss it later in the direct letters.

Hi, average temperature is about 8-10C. You should pack warm jackets and shoes. It may rain as well. If you come in the beginning of October you might see one of the prettiest seasons we have called Golden autumn. A visit to Peterhof park with fountains still operating and trees being golden will be impressive!

Dear Lorella, just to add to said above if you are interested in history - you can start from the first house that had appeared in Saint-Petersburg - from Log Cabin of Peter the Great (by the way nearby is the famous cruise Aurora that gave the blank shot and it was start for October Revolution of 1917) and then follow the whole list written by my colleagues. As for architectural masterpieces I wouldn't miss splendid Smolny Cathedral by Rastrelli in barocco style, famous Mariinsky theatre (former Kirov Opera and Ballet House) and Nicolas Epiphany Cathedral nearby. Shopping you can do besides Nevsky prospect(Nevsky is on the first place, nevertheless) in a newly opened "Gallery" on Ligovsky Prospekt near to Moscow railway station with a lot of boutiques inside. Enjoy your staying in our beautiful city!

6. Nevsky prospekt

2. Pavlovsk - Paul's palace
3. Peterhof - Gardens and any of 20 museums there

This is a short list of 'must-sees' which can be accomplished with the other sites upon your interest.

There is a shopping quarter between Grand Hotel Europe and Sadovaya street for fashion and Arts Square for souvenirs.

Andrey (Private Guide in St. Petersburg) 4/18/2011:
Most popular spots to appreciate the city - its main squares, Palace (marked with 155-ft-high Alexander column), St.Isaac's (with the respective cathedral and the equestrian monument to Nicholas I) and Senate (with the Bronze Horseman overlooking the Neva banks from the top of its granite pedestal), Arts' and Ostrovsky; view of Smolny cathedral, spit of Vasilievsky island (magnificent view of the Hermitage museum complex in the afternoon), spires of Peter and Paul cathedral and the Admiralty; non-typical for the western-looking city but very popular Russian-style Church on the Spilt Blood... Still too many items to enumerate...
More complicated is to advise about shopping. In Nevsky prospect you can find several big shopping galleries combining historical outlook with modern standards inside; Gostiniy Dvor (Merchante' Yard), Passage - with some more nearby, all in Nevsky prospect.
Another, completely new malls - near Sennaya square, traditional area for local shopping (Pik and Sennaya).

Kseniya Gurova (Private Guide) 4/18/2011:
Hello, Lorella! Very glad to hear from you and happy to help you. As for the shopping...What kind of shopping would you like to have? Souvenirs or clothes? There plenty of different souvenir shops, mostly in the city downtown. We also have a number of big shopping centers, but only few can be found in the city center, but it's possible. Some people go shopping to the centralcity's avenue Nevsky prospect, there the shops are different, some can be expensive and to my mind there are not enough of them in there.
As for the sights...here below there is a list of the main places of interests to visit...

1.the Hermitage(the largest museum in Russia, one
of the largest in the world, there you will see Leonardo
da Vinci,Rafael,Titian etc.) It's in the Palace square,
the main square of the city

2. Peter and Paul's Fortress( since it's the first
building, founded in the city in 1703 in the course of
war with Sweden, it was build to protect the city and
country from the Baltic sea) and Peter and Paul's Cathedral on its territory.

3.St. Isaak’s Cathedral - one of the highest building in
the world (many people think it's the 3rd or the
4th). From its colonade you’ll see a panorama of
the city.

4.Spilled Blood Cathedral-it's very famous and
beautiful. It's all covered with mosaic inside. It possesses the largest space of mosaic in Europe.

5.Walk along the Nevsky thoroughfare-the main street

6.Tsarskoe Selo,(today it's Pushkin city, named so after
famous Russian poet and writer Alexander Pushkin)and
Catherine palace on its territory. Catherine palace is
a museum now, which contains a famous Amber Room,
which is considered to be one of the eight wonders of the world.

7.Peterhoff - it's called Russian Versile.
It's located on the bank of the Gulf of
Finland, which is a part of Baltic sea, so it's almost
located on the bank of sea. There is a fabulous park there
With lots of beautiful fountains. It’s worth seeing. There is
also a Grand Palace to visit on it's territory and
many small museums, such as museum of bicycles, of
porcelain etc.

8.Russian museum, which possesses the largest collection
of russian art. It's bigger, than Tretyakov's gallery in
Moscow

9.And I strongly recommend you to take a boat
trip by the rivers and canals of the city!!! It's
better to take an open-topped boat!(in case it's warm of course) Our city is absolutely different from water. Water has always
played a very impotant role in Sain-Patersburg...It
was founded in the course of war for the access to the Baltic
sea, it was founded on the swamp and to dry this swamp
a lot of canals and rivers were dug here, today 1/3 of
the whole city territory is water! If you don't take this
boat trip, you won't see Saint-Petersburg!!!

You are welcome with any quetsions!

Best regards,
Kseniya

Hi, Lorella! I strongly recommend you to visit Hermitage museum, Russian museum, St. Isaak cathedral, Cathedral on the Spilled blood, Peter and Paul fortress. I also suggest you to go to the suburbs of St. Petersburg: Paterhof with about 200 fountains (if you come in May-September) and Pushkin with famous Amber room. "Gostinniy Dvor" on the Nevskij avenue is a nice place for shopping.
Best regards, Yuri
