You would be surprised to know that the history of the city is very much interwoven with the history of Jews living in it. But during the rule of the National-Socialists in Austria, millions of Jews were murdered and deported in the Holocaust. Since the middle of the 20th century the Jewish society started to recover from those unimaginable atrocities.

During more than 800 years of their existence in Vienna, the Jews have founded approximately 93 synagogues in the city. It is worth noting that after the Kristallnacht pogrom only the Stadttempel synagogue has survived.
