Information about Amalfi
The Amalfi coast stretches for about 50 km along the southern side of the Sorrentine Peninsula and it is considered to be one of Europe’s most breathtaking coasts. The sceneries are truly astonishing here: cliffs are terraced with scented lemon groves that sheer down into sparkling seas, or whitewashed villas clinging to unforgiving slopes while sky and sea merge in one vast blue horizon.
Medieval architecture of Amalfi is one of the major factors that attracts crowds of tourists here. If you are planning to visit Amalfi take note of the following landmarks: Sant’Andrea cathedral built at the beginning of the 11th century, the convent time of the Normans and the campanile. The city’s architecture is notable not only because of its age but also because of the beautiful blend of the northern forms and sharp lines with the Byzantine style.
Chiostro del Paradiso, which means “Cloister of Paradise” is definitely a must see! It was built at the beginning of the 13th century by a famous architect of the tile Filippo Augustariccio. Initially it was used as a burial ground for the nobles of Amalfi, so this place had to correspond to their sophisticated taste. The pointed arches and white columns reflect the clear that the Arab world had on Amalfi.
