Hermitage. This word is enough to come to St. Petersburg. Hermitage is the largest museum of Russia and one of the largest in the world. Its collections number about 3 million items. After the tour our tourists often say that they saw many pieces of art in a piece of art. Let me explain to you why the Hermitage got this definition.

Collections of the Hermitage are located in 5 buildings – 4 of which are former royal palaces (just imagine those marvelous interiors) and 1 – a former royal theatre. Our tour starts in the Winter Palace- main palace of the Russian Empire, a winter residence of the royal family- we’ll walk through enfilade of gala state rooms which once witnessed luxurious ball parties and official receptions and now house the collections of art. We’ll move to the second palace built for our empress Catherine the Great as her private quarters and a place to house the pieces of art she started to collect in 1764.

We’ll see beautiful hanging garden of Catherine the Great and a very rich and elegant interior. Two more palaces for us to see are Old and New Hermitages, both of which can rival with the bWinter palace in their interiors. We’ll walk from one marvelous interior to another which are pieces of art in themselves while observing other pieces of art of the most famous European masters such as Leonardo da Vinci, Rafael, Rembrand.

Moreover the Hermitage has the best collection of French impressionists in the world – Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Cézanne, Vincent Willem van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso and others.
