Novgorod is one of the oldest towns of Russia. It’s situated in 155 kilometers to the South from Saint Petersburg. It was founded in 859 and is considered to be the cradle of the Russian civilization. Russian people say that “Novgorod is father; Kiev is mother, the heart Russia”. There is the oldest building of the country, built in 1044, the famous Kremlin of Novgorod. In the old days it was administrative, religious and public center. It was here where the first Russian books were written and kept. Novgorod became the first center of Old Rus where liquidation of illiteracy was started. People used birch bark for writing.

In addition medieval Novgorod was a very important artistic center of Europe. Its schools of icon painting, architectural traditions, and decorative art, applied art and jewellery workshops were famous and highly appreciated in Europe.

Nowadays it’s very difficult in Novgorod to understand where the end of the city and beginning of the museum is. Only in the historical center there are 40 churches. The most attractive and interesting is Saint Sofia’s Cathedral. The stone building of the cathedral is unique and dates back to the XI century. The interior is decorated with three-meter frescos representing profits, images of the saints and mosaic works in the altar part. The magnificent iconostasis with Russian icons in silver frames can impress every visitor of the Cathedral. It’s also interesting to visit Saint George’s monastery, Saint Nicolas’ Cathedral and the museum under the open air representing folk wooden architecture.
