Savior on the Spilled Blood

This is the most picturesque church of Saint-Petersburg which is also famous as the Church of the Resurrection of Christ. It’s considered to be the gem of the city. It was built on the spot where in 1881 the Russian emperor Alexander I was mortally wounded by the bomb tossed by the terrorists. The church attracts your attention, because of the wonderful mosaic works covering the territory of 7000 square meters. It’s also decorated with 20 kinds of marble, semi-precious Russian stones like jade, rhodonite and serpentine. During the Soviet period much damage was caused to its interior and many precious church items were stolen. The restoration works started in the 70th lasted for 27 years.

The Kazan Cathedral

This is the most non-typical cathedral of the city. It was built on the design of the Russian architect Voronihin who got wonderful education in Italy and was inspired by St. Peter’s Cathedral in Rome. Nowadays it’s the main cathedral of the city, devoted to our Lady of Kazan, who is considered to be patroness of the Russian families. The miracle-working icon with the image of our Lady is located in the altar part and is decorated with silver. At the same time the cathedral is the pantheon of military glory devoted to the victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1812. Mikhail Kutuzov, the main Russian field-marshal, the victor over Napoleon, is buried inside the Cathedral.

Saint Isaac’s Cathedral which has one of the highest and biggest domes in the world. It was built by the French architect August Monferrand within 40 years. 43 kinds of minerals, among them French, Italian and Russian marble, semiprecious stones like malachite and lapis–lazuli were used in its decoration. The amazing columns of the Cathedral are made of one piece of granite and weigh 112 tons each. For its cupola 100 kilos of pure gold were used. It’s a wonderful museum of applied art where you can find bronze sculptures, paintings and mosaics.
