Your Guide to London Attractions

For hundreds of years this city has remained in the very center of global affairs, with a remarkable history that intertwines with far-flung countries and obscure islands all over the world. As the city of London has grown and thrived throughout the centuries, it has perfectly preserved much of its own historical landmarks and iconic architecture, while all along hurtling forward in progressive modern advances. It is the marvelous blending of history and contemporary attractions that makes a visit to the largest city in Europe so magical and appealing.

There are so many “must-see” attractions in London that it would take several days of exploration just to take in the most significant sights and activities. Many visitors decide to engage the services of a private guide in London, to make the most of their time in London and allow a professional to smoothly and conveniently make all the arrangements for the best tours.

Whether your interests lie in the historical realm, or you desire a cultural experience and modern entertainments, (or some of both worlds) you will definitely find London to be a city with something for everyone. From the cultural events of the West End, to the legendary Square Mile, to the clubs and restaurants of Soho, London welcomes visitors with a myriad of attractions. Certainly visitors must take in Big Ben, Westminster Abbey and the Tower of London, and you definitely can’t miss the London Eye or Piccadilly Circus. Buckingham Palace is still the royal residence and a sight you must experience, and the lovely parks such as Kew Gardens, Hyde Park and Serpentine Lake offer islands of tranquility in the sea of London’s fast paced activity. Of course you can’t see everything in London in a few days, but even a few of the most significant London attractions will make for an amazing vacation experience.

The Tower of London

The Tower of London

Situated in the oldest section of the city where Roman conquerors established their first garrisons, this imposing edifice has been the site of some of history’s most significant events. The infamous tower and its complex of buildings has been the setting for legendary intrigue, including royal murders, political prisoners, tortures and executions. Included in the price of a ticket are costumed reenactments that depict some of the towers exciting past. The Crown Jewels are on display here as well, and the Royal Armories collection is housed in the White Tower.

Piccadilly Circus

Piccadilly Circus

You’ll find excitement here in this fast paced district that closely resembles Time Square in New York. Located in the popular West End, Piccadilly Circus is the best place in London to find all types of entertainment, fantastic shopping and a thriving nightlife. Bright neon signs, crowds of interesting people and plenty of fun make this a place to really experience London’s contemporary culture.

Big Ben

Big Ben

Probably the most iconic landmark of the United Kingdom, Big Ben is also the largest four-faced clock tower in the world. Attached to the House of Parliament on the northern end of the Palace of Westminster, this world famous clock has chimed nearly every single hour since 1858. Inside the clock tower isn’t open to the public, but Parliament House offers a great educational tour.

Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey

One experiences a sense of wonder when entering this majestic cathedral where every royal coronation has taken place since 1066. This beautiful church with its rich history has also seen royal funerals and royal weddings, most recently the highly publicized wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. You’ll need a ticket to enter the abbey and museum, but there is no charge to explore the Cloisters, College Garden and St. Margaret’s Church.

London Eye

London Eye

You’ll have a spectacular bird’s eye view of the entire city of London in all its glory from atop this incredible giant Ferris wheel. The London Eye is the most popular paid tourist attraction in the city, with over 3 ½ million people taking the ride every year. It’s the highest Ferris wheel in Europe at 443’ tall, with 32 unique observation capsules that can hold as many as 25 people within the glass domes. An experience you’ll not want to miss in daylight, it’s said that the nighttime view of the city lights is even more incredible.

Whether you choose to journey back in time at historical sites or experience the excitements of contemporary London, your time here will  most certainly create wonderful, lasting memories.
