This time our destination will be the countryside of Patagonia. This region is shared by two countries – Chile and Argentine. You probably know that Patagonia has a reputation of the place with the most incredible and breath-taking landscapes in the world. No wonder Patagonia attracts so many tourists each year. It is worth noting that tourism has become a pivotal part of the region’s economy. At first it attracted mostly backpackers, who came to Patagonia to explore the unique natural spots and enjoy the marvelous views. But today the tourism industry is significantly more developed. Chile private guides offer various services and tours, cruises and even trips to Antarctica.

The development of tourism has stimulated appearance of new markets and traditional crafts export. This crafts usually include various preserves, confectionery, guanaco textiles and Mapuche Handicrafts. Lots of people became interested in this wonderful land and even such celebrities as for example Christopher Lambert and Sylvester Stallone bought huge territories of Patagonia. The fauna of the region is very rich and is represented by such animals as rheas, guanacos, South American ostrich and others. We will have to drive across the hilly land until we reach the famous Otway Penguin Reserve. Each year from late autumn to early spring the Otway Bay is occupied by thousands of penguins. You will have a unique opportunity to take a closer look at these incredible birds. You will learn a lot of interesting information about the way they nest, live, brood, feed and so on.  As soon as we reach the reserve you will see miles of grasslands, which are interspersed with sandy areas.

You will have to walk for approximately ten minutes until you reach the penguin rockery. Any private guide in Santiago will strongly recommend you to visit this reserve and get acquainted with penguins. It is worth noting that the birds are usually very curious and eager to communicate with people. But you should note that they are untamed, and if they notice any sign of hostility, they will immediately run away or try to hide in the water. Please don’t try to touch them, because they can bite, and cause serious wounds. There is a special viewing spot at the reserve, where you could enjoy the view of numerous penguins in their natural inhabitance.
