The historic Gallo-Roman village of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence has more to boast about than its quiet, cobbled streets suggest, for it was here that the world-renowned French prophet Michel de Nostradamus was born and also served as the inspiration for van Gogh´s masterpiece “Starry Night.” 

You will learn of the history in the old quarter that was once encased behind the 14th Century walls, part of which are still evident today and visit the peaceful monastery-come-hospital of Saint-Paul de Mausole where in just 53 weeks van Gogh completed 143 oil paintings and more than 100 drawings. 

The next stop will be the ancient region of Les Baux-de-Provence an extraordinary outcrop in the majestic Alpilles mountain. It is believed that the area was first inhabited as far back as 6000 BCE, but it most distinguishing features today is the 12th Century castle which was once home to the rebellious Manville family who led a protestant revolt against Cardinal Richelieu in the mid 17th Century. 

The final destination of your tour is to the Romanesque city of Arles where you will visit the impressive Roman amphitheatre together with the ruins of an ancient theatre and the remarkable Church of St. Trophime which is considered one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture and has attracted the attention of distinguished orders like the now-famous Knights Templar and their Crusader cohorts the Hospitallers.
