Caserta is without any doubt a must-visit town! It is situated only 22 km north of Naples and there is one good and compelling reason to drop in this underrated town – to take a look at the grandeur of the colossal Palazzo Reale. Most people know this palace by the name “The Italian Versailles” and indeed, it is as luxury and beautiful as Versailles itself.

Palazzo Reale is one of the greatest - and unfortunately last – achievements of Italian baroque architecture. Besides its unspeakable beauty and grandeur this palace is famous for featuring in several well-known movies: several scenes of Mission Impossible were shot here along with the scenes at Queen Amidala’s royal residence from Star Wars Episode 1. Caserta was founded at the beginning of the 8th century by the Lombards on the remains of a Roman settlement atop Monte Tifata.

There are beautiful gardens behind the aforementioned Palazzo Reale, where you can stroll along the tree-lines or have a good 30-minutes bicycle ride. It is worth noting that Caserta is situated on the main train line between Naples and Rome, so it won’t be a trouble to change your location as deemed necessary. Both train and bus stations are near the Palazzo Reale entrance.
