Information about Antananarivo
The capital and biggest city in Madagascar is Antananarivo. It’s also the communications, administrative and economic center. The city sits high on top of a ridge about 90 miles from the East Coast. The main crop in Antananarivo is rice while they also export other food products, beverages, textiles and cigarettes. The architecture in the area consists of a mix of modern and older styled houses and buildings. Travelers should be warned that pollution and poverty are at a high level.
There are many interesting things to do in Antananarivo. Outdoor markets are called Zomas and you will find many here for purchasing local wares. A visit to Ambohimanga Hill will show you the history of the area. This hill is one of the most important spiritual and historic sites for the Malagasy people. The twelve sacred hills of Imerina are located here and Ambohimana Hill is one of them. Royal buildings, burial grounds, places of rituals and a sacred forest can be viewed. A short trip from Antananarivo will take you to Lemurs Park where you can visit lemurs in their natural habitat. Churches, statues, a mosque, steep hills, cobbled streets and rice paddies add to the uniqueness of this city.
