How to describe a Dutch river decorated by 17 windmills..? Even if you watched photographs of Kinderdijk over and over you just will be astonished to experience them in real life. Eight of them are made of stone , the other eight mills are reed covered octagunal wooden windmills. Only by walking in this area you 'll understand how important this invention was to the Dutch in former centuries in order to control the danger of floodings.

Of course the windmill could not function by itself, it was only one link in a whole system of dikes, dams with sluice gates where the water was pumped from the lower canal to the higher laying river. Kinderdijk makes you understand why even today the Dutch are known worldwide for their expertise in watermanagement. One windmill is open to visitors and we learn how a millers family lived and survived in old times. This tour is easy to combine with a half day Delft, Gouda or The Hague.

As the distance between the cities is quite small, I would recommand to visit 2 or 3 cities/attractions in one day.
