A great piece of history to visit is Altamira Castle. It was initially constructed in the 12^th and 13^th centuries and was reconditioned at a later time using brick exterior during the 15th century. It had served as the town hall and as a prison in the course of the Spanish Civil War. Nowadays the castle houses the Elche Archaeology and History Museum. The Basilica of Santa Maria is a stunning landmark that should not be overlooked. Its appearance is amazing and appears almost as an impressive sand castle. This church is positioned in the place where the central Mosque was located at the time of the Muslim period.
